Composition and Scoring

Writing music is my favourite thing to do. I’ll always be interested in writing original music for the stage and the screen. You can contact me about a commission (or anything else) in the CONTACT page.

Writing Samples and demo reel

I’m working on having samples and a demo reel available on this page but for now I have a few samples to listen to here: alextheclark.bandcamp.com

Music Copying, Score Preparation and Demo Mockups

As a copyist it’s my job to make sheet music legible and easy for musicians to read quickly. If you’re a composer, you can write as complicated music as you like but the copyist will make it as clear to the musician or conductor as possible.

Preping the Score

With a decade of experience in the orchestra library with both the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony and the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra I have learned what professional classical musicians need on the page to do their best work.

Demos

If you need to present your composition and want it to sound as close to a live recording as possible I can help you by creating a demo using sound libraries that do a very good job of sounding like the real thing.

Music Arranging

After music has been written it can sometimes be reimagined for a different ensemble or perhaps fleshed out for a full band. As an arranger I enjoy working collaboratively with music writers of all sorts to build a work into something bigger than what they started with.

My Specialty

I mostly have experience writing for full symphony orchestra but I enjoy working with bands and pop/indie/rock artists to arrange their music too. Sometimes that’s adding a string quartet to you song or making your piano score into a symphonic masterpiece.

Conducting and Live performance

As a conductor I find it very satisfying conducting my own works but I find I learn so much more preparing other composers music. It’s a fine balance. Highlights in my conducting career have been working with each of the string ensembles at the VSO School of Music as well as conducting a work I wrote for the North Shore Chamber Ensemble called The North Shore.

Live Orchestral Video Directing

Since 2016 I have been the go-to video director for the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra’s live concerts. These include the Musically Speaking series, several specials, shows for kids and the entire 40 week COVID season of 2020-2021 where we recorded over 100 works. I didn’t direct video with the VSO in beginning of 2023 so that I could focus on other projects but I’m pleased to be rejoining the team as of September 2023.

Music Technology Consulting and Teaching

If you’re learning music production and need help getting started with a DAW like Logic Pro X or music notation software like Finale or Sibelius I can help you get started and develop strategies to continue learning. I’ve also consulted on audio/video infrastructure and install projects with budgets from $10K - $500K. I can help you set up a home studio or a professional theatre.

Online or in person

Most of my consulting/teaching is done online but I have also presented in person as well. I also teach beginner violin/viola and guitar lessons. I prefer to do these lessons in person.
